Tom Holland to star in West End production of 'Romeo & Juliet' in London

Tom Holland is swinging back to the world of live theater.
The Spider-Man actor will star as Romeo in a West End production of William Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet" in London. He shared the news on Instagram on Tuesday, one day after teasing a "big announcement."
The production of "Romeo & Juliet" comes from Jamie Lloyd, the theater director who has previously worked on Broadway with Jessica Chastain in "A Doll's House" and with Tom Hiddleston in "Betrayal."
"Romeo & Juliet" will have a limited run at London's Duke of York's Theatre for 12 weeks beginning in May. The production is described as a "pulsating new vision of Shakespeare's immortal tale of wordsmiths, rhymers, lovers and fighters."

This will be something of a homecoming for Holland, who started his career in theater. Beginning in 2008, the actor played Michael Caffrey, the best friend of the title character, in "Billy Elliot the Musical" at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London. He later played Billy Elliot himself.
In a GQ profile published in 2021, Holland recalled coming down with tonsillitis on the day of his debut but managing to get through the performance without anyone knowing. "I was like, 'I can't miss this, because all of these people are coming,'" he told the outlet.
Holland is coming off a performance in the Apple TV+ series "The Crowded Room," a thriller he also produced. The show received largely negative reviews from critics, a fact Holland acknowledged while promoting it.
"It's no secret that my show has been so horribly reviewed," he said on Unilad's "Get a Job" series, adding that he's still "incredibly proud" of it.

In June, Holland said that "The Crowded Room" was so challenging to make that he was taking a year off from acting to recover. "The show did break me," he toldExtra. "There did come a time where I was sort of like. 'I need to have a break.' I disappeared. I went to Mexico for a week and had some time on a beach. And I'm now taking a year off, and that is a result of how difficult this show was."
Holland last played Spider-Man in 2021's "Spider-Man: No Way Home." A release date for a potential fourth "Spider-Man" film hasn't been confirmed, but Holland said in November that "we have been actively engaging in conversations about what it could potentially look like for a fourth rendition of my character," according to Collider.
